Adam SmallDirector of Operations
The Menace’s director of operations since 2007, Adam Small has more than 15 years' experience in the sports industry.
The Muscatine native spent five years with Minor League Baseball's Burlington Bees. He is a 2002 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, where he majored in marketing management, minored in studio art, and met his wife, Alaina.
The Smalls live in Urbandale with their sons Noah (born Sept. 2008) and Landon (born Oct. 2011). In 2011, Adam received the Premier Development League's Betsy McAdams Key Grip Award, an annual honor that recognizes the league's top behind-the-scenes contributor. He has also been part of the Menace's 2009 PDL Organization of the Year recognition and 2014 PDL Communications Award.
What I do for the Menace:
I oversee the organization’s tournaments, game-day operations, internship program, and media relations. Responsible for the team’s Premier Development League and Women's Premier Soccer League operations and registrations, I take care of the details to get our men's and women's players settled into Des Moines and playing for the Menace. Like everyone else on our staff, I help with the planning and execution of our sales and marketing initiatives.
The best thing(s) about my job:
Getting to work with great people and working for a great company – Kum & Go Corporation. Our staff is united by common goals, passionately trying to grow the sport of soccer and get more people excited about the game. My favorite part of this job is leading the Menace's internship program, providing opportunities for college students to grow in a professional environment.
Before my time with the Menace, my wife was my biggest soccer connection. Alaina loves soccer, and she’s definitely a more accomplished athlete than I am. Alaina co-captained the UNI Panthers during their first seasons of D-I soccer. I have an eternal debt to the game of soccer; without it, I never would have met my wife and best friend.
Other jobs I’ve had:
Assistant GM of sales & marketing for the Burlington Bees (affiliate of the Kansas City Royals); sales rep for Cintas and The Des Moines Register; sports editor and writer for The Northern Iowan student newspaper; intern for the Burlington Bees
Favorite sports teams besides the Menace:
UNI, Iowa, Drake, Kansas City Royals and Sporting Kansas City
Favorite soccer players:
Menace alumni in the pros, including Danny Cruz, Lamar Neagle, Deshorn Brown and Andy Gruenebaum
Being a husband and father, reading, drawing, collecting random t-shirts, starting a new church community (thrive UMC) and working with friends to organize the Food Truck 5K for Iowa Homeless Youth Centers.
