WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, June 17, 2017 – Perhaps it’s only fitting that Kason Crall’s high school career ended on another shootout win.

A couple weeks after his Norwalk team pulled out an Iowa Class 2A title by shootout, Crall helped his all-star team win in this dramatic fashion.

The state’s top graduated seniors played an evenly matched 2017 Iowa East-West All-Star Cup today at Valley Stadium. Following a 1-1 deadlock after 80 minutes, the West side prevailed, 4-3, in kicks from the mark.

The goals arrived in back-to-back minutes. Newton’s Josh Ventling put the East up in the 64th minute; Crall quickly responded with a nifty scissors-left move from the midfield, creating space for a 30-yard bomb from the right side.

Like he did in Norwalk’s championship against Cedar Rapids Xavier, Crall converted his PK with a precise placement to the bottom-right corner. The West’s Julius Cooper (West Des Moines Valley), Tyler Paulson (Tri-Center), and finally Cade Longnecker (Waukee) also made good on their kicks.

“A shootout win feels great – Two in a row,” said Crall, who will continue his soccer career at Western Michigan. “I’ve gone to the left side every time up until this season. I’ve made the change the change this year, and it’s worked pretty well. I’m 4-for 4.”

Scoring for East in the shootout were Bettendorf’s Jack Dunn, Linn-Mar’s Noah Martin and Iowa City West’s Conor Zielinski.

Johnston goalkeeper Alex MacGregor, a future Grand View Viking, made the only save in the decisive sequence.

“There wasn’t much pressure, being an all-star game,” MacGregor said. “But it always feels good to make the save. I just got the read in time and went for it. Just glad to go out with a win.”

The East-West All-Star Cup is hosted by the Des Moines Menace. The Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association organizes the cup for boys and girls games, which are presented by Soccer Master.

The all-star action opened a doubleheader capped by the Menace’s 1-0 Premier Development League win over the Thunder Bay Chill.

The girls all-stars get their shot next Saturday (June 24) at 4:30 p.m., back here at Valley Stadium.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Kason Crall, for finding the net in regulation and in the shootout. Crall wrapped up his Norwalk High School career with three state titles (2014, 2016, 2017). He was one of five former Des Moines Menace Academy members on the West all-star team, along with West Des Moines Valley’s Julius Cooper, Des Moines Hoover’s Hacimana Richard, Dallas Center-Grimes’ Ethan Dunn and Des Moines Roosevelt’s Jack Heston.
