The girls' version of the 2018 Iowa High School All-Star Game was tied 1-1 after regulation play on June 23 at Valley Stadium.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, June 23, 2018 – Knotted 1-1 after 80 minutes of girls soccer in the Iowa High School All-Star Game, the action went to a shootout.

And, after the first nine shooters converted their kicks from the mark, East goalkeeper Heather Hoeger took matters in her own hands today at Valley Stadium.

Hoeger stuffed the shot of Spencer’s Katie Moser, who was the goal-scoring hero in the early going. Moser put the West side up 1-0 in the 10th minute, and Union’s Emma Rottinghaus evened the match 17 minutes later.

“I got my hand on the first one, but I was nowhere the next three,” said Hoeger, a recent North Scott grad. “It helped knowing that we scored on our first five attempts. I knew I just needed to stop it, and I started going to my right – that’s where I read it. When it came right to me, I was like ‘Alright, I got it!”

The all-star goalkeepers for both sides were clutch when called into action. Hoeger, Iowa City Regina’s Megan Wick, Storm Lake’s Kaylee Oehler and Ankeny’s Laina Routson all did their part in this defensive battle.

“It’s a really good feeling to end my high school career with a win,” said Hoeger, who will continue her career at St. Ambrose University. “Great to meet girls from all around Iowa and get to play with this great group of girls.”

The East’s shootout scores came from Elena Minor and Paige Diebold (Cedar Rapids Xavier teammates who went first and second), Rottinghaus, Tatum Tremain (Collins-Maxwell) and finally Erica Bossard (Pella).

Scoring for the West in the shootout were Tori Ubben (Ankeny Centennial), Sydney Fisher (West Des Moines Valley), Danielle Bonewitz (North Polk) and Melina Rodriguez (Des Moines Lincoln).

Hosted by the Des Moines Menace, the East-West All-Star Cup is an annual showcase of the state’s graduated seniors. The Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association organizes the cup for boys and girls games, which are presented by Soccer Master.

Coming a week after the boys’ turn, the girls’ all-star action opened a doubleheader capped by the Menace’s Premier Development League match against Kaw Valley FC.
