WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Tuesday, June 19, 2018 – A slow start to the Women’s Premier Soccer League season came to an end.
A fast start to the Des Moines Menace’s fourth match was just what the team needed.
The Menace, winless and scoreless in its first three matches, shook off this slump in a confidence-boosting, 4-0 triumph over the host Kansas City Courage last Saturday.
Haley Helverson opened and closed the scoring. She converted her penalty kick in the seventh minute and she scored on an assist from her sister Libby in the 75th.
Right after the first goal, Lauren Ronnfeldt found the net in the eighth minute, and the Menace was in control.
“We dictated the rhythm of the game from the get-go,” Menace assistant coach Hugo Macedo said. “We minimized the mistakes, we were cleaner on the ball, and we are definitely moving in a good direction.”
UP NEXT: The Menace wraps up its road schedule this Saturday against the Kansas City Athletics (3-1-1).
Head coach Justin Vorster’s Menace finishes the season with home matches on June 30, July 1 and July 7.
- Menace goalkeeper Kaylin Swart earned the shutout in the 4-0 win.
- The Courage is 0-3-1, one spot behind the fourth-place Menace (1-3-0) in the standings for the five-team WPSL Heartland Conference.
- In the team’s first three matches, the Menace was outscored 9-0, with a 6-0 differential in the first 20 minutes of matches.
- Since a 2-0 win at Minnesota on June 21, 2017, the Menace was on a six-match winless streak.
