The Menace women battled in a backto-back road setbacks to Fire & Ice SC (June 9) and the St. Louis Lions (June 10).

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Monday, June 11, 2018 – Three games into the 2018 Women’s Premier Soccer League season, the Des Moines Menace is still in search of its first win – and goal.

The Menace came home empty-handed from the St. Louis area after a pair of losses.

A week after dropping Des Moines 4-0, defending WPSL champ Fire & Ice claimed a 3-0 win on Saturday. The Menace found itself in a two-goal hole less than 20 minutes into this one.

“Fire & Ice showed us why they are national champions. A very strong and well-organized team,” Menace assistant coach Hugo Macedo said. “I’m proud of the way our players competed and fought until the last minute of the game.

On Sunday, the St. Louis Lions – a team coming off a 1-1 road draw on Saturday night against the Kansas City Courage – won their inaugural WPSL regular-season home match. The first-year side made good on a penalty kick in the ninth minute, though it wasn’t until the 87th minute that the Lions put the match out of the Menace’s reach.

“Again, another early goal in the game. That definitely affects the structure and the concentration of the team,” Macedo said. “It’s not very easy to play two full games in less than 24 hours, but once again, not a single player on the field gave less than 100 percent of their effort. Not pleased with the loss, of course, but very happy with their attitude.”

UP NEXT: The Menace closes its road schedule the next two Saturdays in Kansas City: June 16 against the Courage and June 23 against the Athletics.

Des Moines closes the season with three home matches – June 30, July 1 and July 7.
