The Menace received two goals apiece from John Sosa (pictured) and Deshorn Brown on Friday (July 1), opening a doubleheader with a 4-0 win over WSA Winnipeg.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Friday, July 1, 2011 – John Sosa and Deshorn Brown continue to lead the way for the Des Moines Menace.

The team’s top two scorers each tallied two goals, and the Menace rolled to a 4-0 Premier Development League win over WSA Winnipeg tonight at Valley Stadium. Des Moines improves to 8-3-0 and looks for a series sweep tomorrow night, when these teams compete at 7:30.

“We’re just happy with the result,” said Sosa. “It was hot, it was humid. We started seeing heavy legs out there, but we got the job done.”

Sosa opened the scoring in each half tonight. He capitalized on a free kick in the 17th minute and made good on a penalty kick – the Menace’s first of the season – in the 62nd.

Starting the Independence Day festivities on a night capped off by fireworks, Sosa celebrated his first goal by jumping up on a sideline table, pounding his chest and bringing the crowd of 3,409 to their feet. For his encore, he ran over to the sideline and autographed a ball, handed to him by Menace owner Kyle Krause, and threw it into the stands. The referees did not appreciate the gesture. Sosa received a yellow card.

“We’ve just gotta give back to the crowd, and thank our fans,” Sosa said.

Brown found the back of the net in the 41st and 65th minutes, for his first regular-season goals in a month. He finished off Bryan Perez’s scoring chance for the first goal. His second was set up by Ben Taylor, who pushed the ball past the defense and found Brown wide open.

With his seventh and eighth goals of the season – not counting a pair of hat tricks in June exhibitions – Brown leads Laurie Calloway’s side in goals and points (18), despite being unable to play in four matches. Sosa is right behind, with 17 points on four goals and nine assists.

They’ll try to keep it going tomorrow, looking to go 4-0 against the Heartland Division’s expansion team. The Menace won 2-0 and 4-3 in Manitoba on June 7-8.

WSA Winnipeg (2-8-1) will be without the services of two of its starters tomorrow. Valeriy Kornilov received a red card in the 67th minute; Kristjan Nordman was ejected in the final minute of regulation, when he was shown his second yellow card.

MR. B MAN of the MATCH goes to: John Sosa, for the fourth time this season. Brown has also received the honor four times.

UP NEXT: Tomorrow’s match is presented by Evian Water. All Menace home action starts at 7:30.

The Thunder Bay Chill will be in town next week, for another Friday-Saturday doubleheader.
