OVERLAND PARK, Kan.  – Wednesday, June 1, 2011 – Payback came in decisive fashion tonight for the Des Moines Menace.

One week after the Kansas City Brass rallied for a 2-1 win, the Menace (4-1-0) left little doubt when these Premier Development League teams reunited at Overland Park Soccer Complex. Des Moines cruised to a 5-2 triumph after racing to a 4-0 lead in the first half of a game whose start was delayed 70 minutes by lightning.

Deshorn Brown’s fifth and sixth goals paved the way for the Menace. The speedy Jamaican started the scoring in the 15th minute and gave the Menace a four-goal lead in the 32nd. Diego Marroquin and Bryan Perez also found the back of the net as part of the early rampage.

“A great performance overall. Back on track,” said Menace head coach Laurie Calloway. “We were just more effective finishing than we were last week. Just a better performance, making the most of the opportunities we created.”

The Brass (2-3-0) cut the lead in half before the break. Ricardo Yeverino, who is tied with Brown for the Heartland Division’s goals lead, scored in the 34th minute and assisted Ryan Miller in stoppage time. The Menace’s Uriah Polley added the final cushion in the 67th minute.

Earlier in the day, the Menace received news of the team’s June 14 home date in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The team will be hosting Chicago Fire PDL, thanks to a berth clinched by the Menace’s entry in the United States Adult Soccer Association.

Entering last week’s match with the Brass, the Menace organization had hopes of sending two teams to this year’s Open Cup. The Brass spoiled this possibility a week ago in Liberty, Mo, when Des Moines could have clinched the Heartland Division’s Open Cup berth with a win.

Des Moines leads the all-time series with Kansas City, 21-11-1. The Menace hosts the Brass at Valley Stadium on June 18 and July 23.

Calloway’s crew is at home on Saturday night, hosting Des Moines International at 7:30. The team is preparing for a trip to Canada next week, with back-to-back doubleheaders in Winnipeg (June 7-8) and Thunder Bay (June 10-11).

MR. B MAN of the MATCH goes to: Deshorn Brown, who already has two multiple-goal matches this season. Through his first five PDL matches, the NAIA all-American (who plays for the University of Mobile) has scored more goals than any Menace player has in either of the last two seasons.

UP NEXT: The Menace is back at Valley Stadium on Saturday, hosting Des Moines International on Youth Soccer Night, presented by Powerade and Vitamin Water. All youth-soccer players and coaches receive free admission when they wear their team jerseys or show their coaches’ passes.
