SPRINGFIELD, Mo.  – Tuesday, May 17, 2011 – In its first road match of the season, the Des Moines Menace dealt the Springfield Demize a 3-0 loss tonight at Cooper Complex.

Coady Andrews headed in a pair of first-half goals, and Deshorn Brown notched his second goal, as the Menace improved to 2-0-0 in qualifying action for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, to start the Premier Development League season.

“An outstanding exhibition of domination over the other team,” said Menace head coach Laurie Calloway. “I’m very, very pleased with the cohesiveness of their play. It’s a great start. I just hope we can keep it going.”

Sporting the captain’s band tonight, Andrews made his presence felt in the box, scoring in the 14th and 24th minutes.

“I’ve always felt comfortable in the air,” Andrews said. “I just happened to break free from the defenders a couple times, and my teammates gave me the opportunity to score.”

Each of Andrews’ goals came off corner kicks. John Sosa assisted the first goal, connecting with Andrews on a corner. Luis Piffer set up the second goal, off a set piece following his own corner kick.

“Our midfield and offense were able to get behind (Springfield’s) defense and create some trouble,” said Andrews. “It’s shaping up. The team’s clicking. We’ve got some really dangerous players doing some good work. I’m excited to see what this team can do.”

In the first minute of the second half, Brown collected a pass from college teammate Jubril Lawal (Univeristy of Mobile), then zigged and zagged past a defender to beat Demize goalie Stephen Connor far post. Brown shares the team’s early goals lead with Andrews, after scoring the game-winner in Saturday’s 2-1 decision over St. Louis.

After seeing his team pounce to a 3-0 lead early in the second half, Calloway is not fully satisfied. He would have liked more scoring from his team tonight, knowing that Real Colorado has the edge in the race for the Heartland Division’s Open Cup spot, after outscoring Kansas City, 7-3, in two wins last weekend.

“I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get more goals to separate us from Colorado. In the last 20 minutes, our guys just sort of went on cruise control, taking the foot off the pedal.”

Calloway’s crew looks for another win in Open Cup qualifying action on Saturday, when the team welcomes St. Louis back to Valley Stadium.

Tonight’s victory helps Des Moines keep a perfect 11-0-0 mark in the all-time series against the Demize, which opened the season tonight. Des Moines has outscored Springfield by a staggering 40-3 margin.

The Menace is undefeated in 21 of its last 22 road matches, dating back to May 2008.

MR. B MAN of the MATCH goes to: Coady Andrews, for his two first-half goals and tough defense. Andrews played professionally this winter for the Missouri Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He is a native of Shawnee, Kan., who returns this fall to the University of Missouri-Kansas City for his final semester.
