The Des Moines Menace’s 2011 Winter Coaching Clinic hosted nearly 20 coaches on Jan. 28-29 at Central Campus in Des Moines.

Menace Premier Development League head coach Laurie Calloway, a former Major League Soccer head coach who has played and coached in more than 1,000 pro matches, led the clinic. Recreational-soccer coaches of all levels attended.

Friday night featured classroom sessions; Saturday’s focus was on practical-application sessions in the Central Campus gym. The clinic wrapped up with a session back in the classroom, addressing formations and tactics for the youth game at the 6v6, 8v8 and 11v11 levels. All participants left with a binder full of ideas to take to take to their clubs, with the goal of helping create a fun learning environment where all players will reach their full potential.

Calloway, Neathan Gibson and Kevin Schalk each led classroom and gym sessions. Gibson and Schalk, also former professional soccer players, assist Calloway in coaching the Menace’s PDL side, and they serve as Directors of Coaching for the Menace Academy.
