Former Des Moines Menace players racked up an impressive list of honors this fall.

 

The honor roll for the 2009 college season includes a pair of Menace alumni who are second-team all-Americans and a dozen others who landed on all-conference squads. After helping Des Moines to the Premier Development League’s Elite Eight last summer, eight members of the 2009 Heartland Division champs guided their college teams to the postseason; one played for the NAIA champions.

National-tournament qualifiers

            Champion, NAIA: Lindsey Wilson College (Samuel Asante) defeated The Master’s College (Calif.), 1-0.

            Runner-up, NCAA Division I: Akron (Matt Dagilis) lost to Virginia in a PK shootout in the College Cup final. Undefeated in the regular season, the near-perfect Zips (23-1-1) finished No. 2 in the final poll.

            Final Four: UCLA women (Chelsea Cline) lost to Stanford, 2-1, in the women’s College Cup semifinals, took third in the final poll.

            Elite Eight: Drake (Julien Edwards, Nick Foster, Hunter Kennedy, Jordan Kadlec, Michael Noonan, Thomas Ostrander and Garrett Webb) lost to North Carolina, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Unranked for much of the season, the Bulldogs finished in the final poll’s No. 8 spot.

            Elite Eight: Tulsa (Kyle Cummings and Joe Salem) lost to Akron, 1-0 in the quarterfinals, finished the season at No. 7.

            Elite Eight: Iowa Central Community College (coached by Menace 20s head coach Brandon Ermels, the Region 11 Coach of the Year) was ranked eighth in the final Junior College Division-I poll, after losing to Tyler (Texas) and Yavapai (Ariz.) at the national tournament.

            Sweet 16: Indiana (Cameron Jordan) lost to North Carolina, 1-0, finished the year ranked 20th.

            Sweet 16: Drury (Grant Bowden and Ben Taylor) lost to Lewis, 1-0 in the NCAA Division II national tournament. Ranked as high as second, the Panthers finished in the No. 9 spot.

            First round: New Mexico (Justin Davis and Lance Rozeboom) was stunned by Portland, 2-1, in OT.

            First round: Western Illinois (Martin Browne and Husref Jupic) lost to Drake, 2-1.
