The 2009 Iowa High School All-Star Games, hosted by the Menace this afternoon at Valley Stadium, ended in a split decision, with the East taking the girls’ match 2-0 and the West coming from behind to win the boys’ match 4-3.

The East girls struck with back-to-back goals in the 10th and 11th minutes, thanks to Stephanie Coffin of Dubuque Senior. Coffin scored a goal right after an own goal that resulted from her corner kick.

The West boys clinched the win in the last two minutes, when Jackson Teeling of Dowling Catholic completed a furious comeback for his team. The East built a 3-1 lead, thanks to a goal from Muscatine’s Edwin Arceo (32nd minute) and pair from Iowa City West’s Austin Otto (38th and 47th minute, assisted by Pleasant Valley’s Nick Ehrecke).

Player of the Year, Husref Jupic (Des Moines Hoover), scored in the 54th minute, and Harlan’s Chris Schwery tied the game off a rebound in the 70th minute. Jupic set up Teeling’s game-winner in the 78th minute.

Urbandale’s Noel Medina put the West up 1-0 in the 18th minute.

Coffin and Otto were selected as their game’s Most Valuable Players. They each were presented with a $500 scholarship from the Des Moines Menace.
