Menace, Chill Tie, 1-1

By Des Moines Menace, 06/12/09, 3:00PM CDT

In its 2009 home opener, the defending PDL champion Thunder Bay Chill used a stoppage-time goal to earn a 1-1 tie Friday night against the Menace.

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, Canada  –  June 12, 2009 – In their home opener, the defending Premier Development League champions rallied in stoppage time to earn a tie against the Des Moines Menace. The Thunder Bay Chill clinched a 1-1 draw tonight at Chapples Park, thanks to Nolan Intermoia’s late goal.

This is the fourth-straight tie for the Menace (3-0-4), which extended its unbeaten streak to 11 matches, dating back to a home loss to the Chill last July. Des Moines has not lost on the road in more than a year – not since a 2-0 loss at Colorado on May 23, 2008.

After tying and beating the Chill here a year ago, the Menace has scratched out five points in its last three road clashes with its arch-rival.

The Menace took the lead in the 78th minute, when Armin Mujdzic set up Samuel Asante with a nice cross.

It was Asante’s first goal of the season, and Mujdzic’s first PDL action since he suited up for Des Moines in 2007. Des Moines head coach Casey Mann this week rostered Mujdzic, a five-year veteran, in a move that gives his team more toughness and intensity. The addition paid dividends for the Menace.

After ending last year’s title run with a 17-2-2 mark, the Chill is 2-1-2 to start its pursuit for a third-straight Heartland Division title.

These rivals square off tomorrow night for another 7:30 (EDT) match at Chapples Park. They meet just one more time after tomorrow – an Independence Day showdown at Valley Stadium that comes exactly one year after the Chill blanked the Menace on the same field. Des Moines has not lost since that 3-0 defeat.
