A week after defeating Premier Development League newcomer Rochester (Minn.), the Menace hosts another Heartland Division expansion team – the Real Colorado Foxes.

In the last week, the Menace has welcomed Luke Baker and Jack Pearson (Dayton teammates), Matt Dagilis (Akron), Sterling Copeland (Regis University in Colorado) and Kyle Zobeck, a goalkeeper from Valparaiso who just last year was finishing up his standout high-school career at Iowa City West.

SCOUTING REAL COLORADO: The Foxes started things on the right foot, winning the franchise’s first two PDL matches at home last weekend. At Shea Stadium in Littleton, Colo., Lorne Donaldson’s team took a pair from the Kansas City Brass, winning 3-2 on Saturday and 4-0 on Sunday.

Chris Salvaggione scored three goals for the Foxes, while Byron Cephers also notched six points, on two goals and two assists.

In 2008, the Menace played a pair of exhibition matches against Real Colorado, a provisional club at the time. The Menace lost 0-2 against the Foxes at their place in May, and tied them, 2-2, at Valley Stadium last July, when Des Moines players sported pink jerseys on “Kick for the Cure” Night.

LOOKING AHEAD: After Saturday, the Menace has only two matches left in May – a pair of Saturday meetings with the St. Louis Lions. The Menace plays at St. Louis on May 23 – the final U.S. Open Cup qualifier for both teams – then hosts the Lions on May 30.

The Lions made their first Open Cup appearance in 2008, before finishing one spot behind Des Moines in the final standings. Des Moines was 7-4-5 last season; St. Louis was 7-5-4.
